How do I know if we are a good match?
I recommend that all clients schedule an initial consultation at no cost. This FREE 20 minute introduction is an opportunity for you to ask questions and determine if we will be a good match without the pressure of a full session and fee.
Therapy does not begin in this initial consultation, rather it allows us to discuss what therapy would look like with me as your counselor. We also discuss fee, service medium and frequency of visits based on what works best to meet your needs.
Do you take insurance?
I do not take insurance or reside on any insurance panels. There are many reasons that I am private/self pay. I offer a free 20 minute initial consult to answer any questions, including questions about self pay vs. insurance. If you decide at the end of the consult to use a provider that takes your insurance, I am happy to help with referrals for in network providers.
You may check with your insurance plan to see if they reimburse out of network providers, if so, I can provide an invoice allowing you to submit to your provider. I will not interact directly with any insurance provider. Many clients utilize their flex spending account to pay for services.
Do you offer sliding scale rates?
Sliding scale fee/rate flexibility may be available upon discussion in consultation. Unless agreed upon in consult, the full rate will apply with the start of sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
Appointments must be cancelled with 24 hours notice by phone or email. Clients will be financially responsible for a fee of $70 for any session cancelled with less than 24 hours notice or missed without prior notification (no-show).
Why would I want to choose online therapy?
Online counseling is ideal for clients that travel, have children or demanding schedules. You are able to have the same experience as an in office session no matter where you might be, without the time spent to and from appointments, and without having to arrange for childcare.
Please contact me to discuss the best format for you and schedule an initial consultation.
What is the difference between Behavioral Health, Coaching and Counseling?
In my practice, Behavioral Health means we are using research based tools and techniques from CBT, REBT, DBT, ACT and other assorted solution focused models. Using these types of modalities to work on lifestyle, personal choices or behavior patterns, along with bringing my own experiences, thoughts and feelings into the conversation you move forward faster. This type of counseling is effective for most symptom management. In my practice it blends into all counseling, but is pulled out as a distinction for clients with a goal to work on behavior changes.
Over time, individual counseling can become deeper work and I tend to lean into the more traditional counseling techniques, but my style is to connect with your work by continuing to be “in the room.” My approach is to use a very direct, solutions-focused approach to build skills, share resources, and provide insight through psycho-education in an attempt to provide faster results. I typically bring myself, my insights and my life experiences into the room more than traditional talk therapy. In that sense, I use a coaching style with all clients.
I label the various Parent Coaching sessions differently as it is directly related to your role as a parent and/or caregiver. Parent Coaching is to support you in your role. Parenting Support is to support my primary client, the child/minor, by meeting with parent(s)/caregiver(s) about the client’s goals and concerns. This is a systems approach that is needed for adolescents because the family system support is so crucial in success. This is different than individual counseling session in its focus.
What are skill building and psycho-education? How are they related to mental health?
Psycho-education is teaching clients about a wide range of mental health topics. In my practice, I strive to educate my clients about all areas that come up in session related to mental health, including understanding how mental health and physical health are connected.
Skill building is learning skills that will help you manage stress, communicate more effectively, understand and regulate emotions and much, much more. Throughout your lifetime you will need a variety of skills because what works one day, may not work the next. You also need to find out which skills work for you because what works for one person, may not work for another. These are the tools that help us manage the ups and downs of life.
